Quote
The top college football prospect in the country announced this week that he's made up his mind where he's going to college, and nobody outside Clemson, S.C., believes him.

Robert Nkemdiche, a 6-foot-5, 270-pound quarterback hunter from Loganville, Ga., had plenty of reasons to go elsewhere. His high school coach played at Alabama. His brother plays at Ole Miss. His friend and former teammate at Grayson High, Nick Schuessler, has committed to Mississippi State.

But there are also many reasons why Nkemdiche chose Clemson. Two of his high school teammates, Wayne Gallman and David Kamara, have committed there. The high school coach he trusts, Mickey Conn, played at Alabama with Clemson coach Dabo Swinney. ........

Actually, I'm surprised more players don't change their commitment. Pressure from coaches, players, family, friends, the media, & others must be enormous.

If we were to compare a football recruits commitment to other types of commitments, let's say, marriage, then it's not a commitment. It's more like the engagement. Yes you have made your announcements known and public, but there is nothing truly binding until "the big day."

There really needs to be a better way of handling the signing of high school recruits. With the recruitment of these kids starting way before their senior year, it's really opened a can of worms as to what is fair for all parties concerned.

Every year there seems to be a case of someone being a big loser on NSD, whether it's the player or the coach. With ESPN dramatizing all of the 5 star signings, it has only added fuel to the fire for the changing of minds to happen and I think it's only going to worsen unless the governing bodies, universities and the NCAA, find a better solution.

But then, you have to ask the question of is it okay to stay the way it is. Most of the time, hurt feelings heal pretty quick.  Wink

Hey Jamos (and anyone else that wants to answer), do you think the above is part, if not all, of the reason many coaches favor an early signing day? If I am not mistaken, it is something that CNS is a big proponent of.

I think Saban is dead set against it, if I remember correctly. He thinks it makes recruiting even worse and more intense.

 Huh?

The downside of signing recruits early is like Rueben said, when you are engaged that is a promise but when you sign the dotted line it becomes a binding contract. These commitments have a season of football to play in high school and so many times they go down with serious knee injuries, etc., if they have signed to play, the university must honor the scholarship even though the player can't play.

 Huh?
Saban has come out in favor of an early signing period.  I think it would make it easier for him, numbers-wise, to see how many scholys he had left, instead of waiting to the last day.

As it is, though, Saban is kicking it with recruiting, so the current system, with all its flaws, isn't stopping Saban from bringing home the talent.
