Battling to back up starter AJ McCarron, redshirt freshman quarterback Phillip Ely appeared to come away with the edge over freshman Alec Morris.

But that was to be expected, Saban said.

"Phillip Ely probably showed that he has a little more knowledge and experience, managed the game a little bit better, executed a little bit better," Saban said. "You know, the freshman played like a freshman...."

I would hope that Ely looked better than Morris, if he hadn't, there is some serious trouble at the QB position.

  True.  I guess the coaches are being fair by saying it's an open competition.

Ely looked good during the spring, and he'll provide a better backup than I expected us to have.  Recall, many people laughed when we recruited him.

Hopefully he'll be there if needed (reference 2's "i-word comment").
