This guy is just trying to grab some attention to himself.

When the AP poll was released this past weekend Michigan was slotted at #8, but the one thing you couldn't help but notice when seeing Michigan's ranking was the "(1)" next to its name. Somebody ranked Michigan at #1 on their ballot, and of course when something this strange happens, people need to know who did it and why.

Well, it wasn't a Michigan beat reporter, but in fact, it was a reporter from a rival of Michigan's. Bob Asmussen covers Illinois for the Champaign News-Gazette, and he explained to Ann Arbor.com why he placed Michigan atop his ballot.

Plus, let's not forget the tale of AP voter Corky Simpson. Back in 1992 everybody in the world thought the Tucscon Citizen sportswriter was an idiot when he was the only voter to put Alabama at #1 in the preseason AP poll. Simpson kept them there all season, too, because Alabama kept on winning.

The Tide would then end the season by upsetting Miami in the 1993 Sugar Bowl and be named national champions.

Simpson got the last laugh then, and for all we know, Asmussen may get it now.

There was a huge difference between the '91 Alabama team compared to last year's Michigan team.  We only lost one game early in the season that year against Florida, and we improved tremendously over the course of the rest of that season.  I remember the excitement and anticipation I felt going into '92.  I knew it was going to be a special year.

Bingo! Exactly what I was thinking. Plus, I don't see Michigan having the defense the '92 Tide team had.

I heard this guy try to defend his position on ESPN.  Basically, he said he liked D. Robinson and Coach Hoke, and gosh, Michigan beat VT in the Sugar Bowl.  The ESPN crew found it amusing.

Corky Simpson also had some inside information. He became friends with Coach Stallings when Stallings was coach of the Cardinals. CGS told him the defense would be good and if they could stay healthy the team could be special.

This sounds like somebody is trying to get Michigan some notariety. I to believe after Alabama Michigan could run the table up North. I think this fellow must have went a little overboard though. RTR!

Let them build 'em up, so we can knock 'em down. And they'll think we beat a powerful team.
