OK, so I'm watching NCSt play Michigan tonight on ESPN -- not the whole game, just a look-in.    And I'm seeing all the hallmarks of a Gottfried-coached team -- lack of hustle on defense, insufficient passing, sloppy play, athletic players who take shots and make some of them.  Even the commentators were talking about how NCSt doesn't hustle on D.

It seems that this style of play can work sometimes, when the shooters get hot.  That is how Bama made the Elite 8 nearly a decade ago -- they were the underdogs and shot lights out because there was no pressure to win.  That, and Antwoine Pettway always hustled.

After a few minutes of watching this, my son grabbed the TV clicker and put it on Adventure Time.  Which was fine, I'd seen enough.  I've seen it before. 

It's almost like football.  While offense makes the highlight reels, championship teams play great defense.  Defense can keep a team in a game when it hits a shooting slump.  It can frustrate a team accustomed to easy shots, to where that team takes bad shots and gets sloppy with its passes.

I don't care that NCSt is ranked and Bama isn't right now.  We're undefeated, they are about to lose their second game.  Soon it will be reversed.  And watching NCSt, I know Bama can take them, easy.

Glad some of our fans have not forgotten how bad Gottfried was as a coach. Michigan 73, NC State 64, 5 minutes left. NC State player fouled out.

I am glad Gottfried is no longer our coach and we have Coach Grant. Our program is on solid ground and looks to be improving.

There is no need to continue to bash Gottfried. He is a former player and was our coach for 11 seasons. He lead us to 5 NCAA and 3 NIT tournaments while winning 201 games. As a player he was outstanding. He started 98 straight games and went to 3 Sweet 16's. His senior year he won the Bryant Award as the schools top scholar-athlete.

If we have to play NC St we will kick his azz. But until then we can wish a former player and coach the best of luck.

No Bashing involved.  Just the facts, ma'am.  Gottfried is a decent coach, was a great player, and will always be part of Bama nation.  Maybe I was just thinking out loud.

I appreciate your loyalty, but Gottfried became a lousy coach who drove the program into the ground. Plus, he became very arrogant who thought of himself as a great coach. Stating facts are not bashing, but the truth can hurt.

I guess I choose to remember the positive things Gottfried did for our program. His NIT run to the finals with a 25 win season in year 3 set the tone for 5 straight NCAA Tournament appearances. Most thought he was a pretty good coach during that stretch. No doubt he let the program decline in his final 3 years but out of his 14 years at Bama as a player and coach 11 of them were very good.

The reason I slam coaches is so fans don't forget what disasters Shula, Dumbose, & Gottfried were for our program. Most fans have very short memories, which means we will fall into the same trap that caused our sports programs so much misery in the past.
