The University of Alabama ended spring football practice with a quarterback race that, as far as can be told, is closer than it was when the spring started. Sophomore A.J. McCarron and redshirt freshman Phillip Sims appear to be neck-and-neck going into the off-season, and redshirt freshman Blake Sims is getting some mention, too, not as a starter, but as a potential change of pace.
So that means - well, what exactly does it mean? Does the uncertainty at quarterback dilute expectations? Does it mean rating Alabama as a preseason top five team nationally, as most prognosticators will do, is a gamble? Or does it put the Crimson Tide in the boat with the rest of its Southeastern Conference brethren?
