I don't think he understands the negative impact this would have on traditional rivalries.

Banging your head against the wall.

Saban said Tuesday he would like to see the SEC expand from eight to nine games, an opinion that surely will draw debate and dissent during the league's annual spring meetings this week

I understand traditional rivalries but I have to go with CNS on this. Scarbinsky just wrote an article on Bama's traditional pancake game which I thought was a slap in the face to the one person that is trying to keep the SEC above the rest of the conferences. I just Saban's his statement on Urban Meyer and the schedule that Ohio State had last year.

CNS is driving the toughness of schedule playing a major role in who is playing for the national championship. If each team in the conference will upgrade their non-conference schedule to match the caliber of the teams in the SEC, this will make the conference games weigh heavy in the minds of those selecting the teams to play in the playoffs. He is trying to eliminate those teams that have been playing weak teams and going undefeated from being even mentioned for the playoffs.

CNS is a genious and the SEC had better listen to him this time.

Since the NCAA added the 12th game to the regular season most teams just added another easy/cupcake game. I like the idea of 9 conference games and one major out of conference game. That still leaves everyone two games to host games Vegas will not put a betting line on.

''One of these days, they're going to quit coming to the games because they're going to stay at home and watch it on TV,'' Saban said. ''Everybody's going to say, `Why don't you come to the games?' Well, if you'd play somebody good, then we'd come to the games. That should be the first consideration. Nobody's considering them. They're just thinking about, `How many games can I win? Can I get bowl qualified? How many tough teams do I have to play?

Some teams are worried about bowl eligibility, having a less-than 50/50 winning percentage playing 9 SEC games.  So many of the SEC bottom dwellers would be opposed to a 9-game schedule.  Vandy is probably one of the more vocal opponents, struggling for bowl eligibility every year, and with less depth than some SEC teams.

Saban is more interested in filling the stadium, and schedule, with interesting games.  So he has the fans in mind.  Bama shouldn't have to worry about bowl eligibility for quite some time, if ever.

There are too many bowl games already. Being bowl eligible should not be a consideration in determining if we should play 8 or 9 conference games.

I do want to keep traditional rivals but I think the Bama-UT and barn-UGA will soon be a thing of the past. No other teams have cross divisional rivals and will not be interested in protecting ours.

One thing I don't like about the 9 game schedule is that some teams will have 4 home games and 5 away games.  Presumably that would alternate, but that would mean every other year would be pretty tough.

Should we add another SEC game, could that not be a way to pick up the rivals that you like so well? One thing for sure if you pick up an Oregon, Oklahoma or somebody it would really show a better SOS. Sounds like a good deal I think. RTR!

Looks like they're staying with 8, at least for now. Guess who the one dissenting vote was?

The short-term answer for the SEC is to keep the number of conference games at eight, but coaches and athletic directors agreed Wednesday that a move to nine is probably inevitable.

One article said that Saban won the 9 game vote 1-13, the other guys just won't know it for a couple of years.

I think most of the coaches in the SEC are afraid of any changes CNS suggests and they might have reason to be, they feel he is trying to one up them because they can't beat him. CNS is so far ahead of the others in seeing the big picture of things that it doesn't surprise me that the others struggle with their programs. They will appreciate his ideas in the end though.  Wink
