But one former Texas assistant coach says the staff got away from evaluating players and simply signed them based on their recruiting rankings.

“You have to have boots on the ground to see these (high school) kids play,” the former Texas assistant tells Sporting News. “You can’t just look at the players in your state and think we’ll just get the highest-rated players out there.”

Can you imagine CNS going about recruiting like this?

To me, this article describes a program that is in disarray.  They know where they want to get to but have no "process" for getting there.  They've lost touch with all the steps they need to take to get the desired end result.  This failure has to be laid at the feet of the head coach.

I have never been impressed with Mack Brown. he has all the money in the world to work with, fantastic facilities, huge fan base, and located in a state with a gigantic amount of football talent, but he struggles to win big. He has won just enough to keep his job, but I think the end is near. He has to win the Big 12 this year or else.
