On the Beat: Grading the first month of Alabama's season to close its first off week

DEFENSE

This group took some heat in Atlanta. West Virginia, though scoring just one offensive touchdown, showed work remained on defending the hurry-up offense. ...........

Statistically, it ranks in the top 10 of every major category and is No. 1 against the runs (47 yards per game).

Surprise: Defensive end Jonathan Allen saw his playing time increase in camp as suspensions and injuries thinned the deep unit. And after exiting the spring on the second team, he's started all four games at defensive end. He's also leading the team with four tackles for loss including a sack with two quarterback hurries on top of that.

MVP: Though Landon Collins' 32 tackles is 13 better than the next guy, it's about more than numbers. ............

Overall grade: B
