How will Penn State attack the Bama D?

Penn State wants to be a running team.  They'd love to have enough O-line push to dominate at the line.  But they know our D is strong enough to prevent that, unless they have success passing.  

What's their formula for success this week vs Bama?

1.  Run 50% of the time;
2.  Lots of delays and draw plays;
3.  Traps galore;
4.  Throw deep early, then seldom again;
5.  Most passing will be screens, especially middle screens.

I look for them to try and pound the ball up the middle. When that does not work they turn to screens, draws and mis-direction. I don't think they are a very good passing team.

Quick hitting runs usually works best against a fast D, but not our 3-4.  Yep, agree; they will pound it if they can.

I look for PSU to allow the field to remain rain-soaked and soggy, with thick uncut grass, in an attempt to take away Bama's speed advantage.  Running the ball should still prove challenging, and a wet field gives receivers a greater advantage, so look for a lot of dinks and dunks, with maybe a few long passes thrown in.  (Bama will crowd the line and dare PSU to throw deep.)

PSU better roll out QB when passing to protect his longevity in game. Drop back passing can be hazardous to QB's health.

I really don't know enough about Penn State's personnel to make specific comments on what their game plan should be.  I'm sure they'd love to run it all day, but unless I'm completely misguided, that ain't gonna happen on our D.  The most success I've seen anyone have against our defenses the past few years has been by throwing crossing routes over the middle underneath our LBs.  With Mosley around, that won't be as successful as in the past.  He's the best coverage guy we've had at LB in a while.

Unfortunately (for our opponents) we're the epitome of size, power, and speed on defense.  And we're well coached.  Your horses aren't going to run with our horses for very long.  You've gotta have da#@ near perfect execution and some luck to beat us.  Hopefully that won't happen this year.

If we can take the crowd out of it early, it will be a long, long day for the Nittany Lions.

I think the game will be closer than last year's game, because Bama has a new QB and the game is at Happy Valley.  It could be a low-scoring, defensive struggle, with field position and special teams play at a premium.  Old Style football.  10 points is about right.  I think the key is for Bama's QBs to avoid mistakes and allow the defense and rushing attack to win the game, which might make 10 points high, but I still picked Bama with the 10.  If Bama's QBs throw interceptions, though, like against Kent State, then throw those 10 points out the window.

I think Coach Paterno has turned over the play calling to his co-ordinators and they want to win so bad they may beat themselves with mistakes. I think they intangibles win this game. Fumbles, interceptions and special teams. RTR!

Now Reuben has the right idea. I do think though if our O-line could get their proper push our running game would be great. EL and TR can carry the rock if they get the chance. RTR!

I remember them with negative rushing yards til late in the game last year. Their "O" came off 1 big pass play and short passes at the corners. Much the same this year. They haven't improved any to speak of and may be worse offensively. Their best chance is to cheat us. Don't rule it out.
