What a waste.

He needs to stay out of Morgan County. He cannot seem to stay away from his high school friends that constantly stay in trouble. His high school coach told me years ago he needs to leave Decatur and never come back.

He has every chance why does he keep coming back when he could be playing a sport and making gobs of money. RTR!

Hartselle is next door to Decatur so he might have been visiting someone. Hartselle is an excellent place to live with low crime and good schools, both academically and in athletics.

You make Hartselle sound nice. I worked there for 20 years. If you like a town that is slow pace with no where to eat or shop. We choose to live in Decatur and have never regretted it. Hartselle is like Cullman. Very racial unless you are a good black athlete. Hartselle also cheats in sports. They have been busted by the AHSAA several times over the years for recruiting football and baseball players from outside their area. Like Auburn their motto is "if you ani't cheating you ani't trying".

Decatur is a nice place but public schools have gone down. I graduated from Decatur High and at the time it was the 6th rated school in state. Nothing close to that now. Decatur has excellent parks & recreation, low crime, and several good neighborhoods. Cullman City has excellent schools, too. If I had young kids, I would choose Hartselle or Cullman over Decatur. Sad, but that's just the way it is, it's about the schools.

Decatur schools are not rated very high for several reasons. They have a mixture of all types of kids. Some just trying to get by, some cannot speak English and a lot just do not care. The good students with parents that care attend advanced classes. My kids took several classes that earned them college credits. I am very high on Decatur City schools. My kids got an excellent education and left prepared for college.

Decatur is a very nice small city. My family loves it here.

Decatur Heritage took most of the best academic students or they moved to Hartselle or Madison. I attended school with the kids of doctors, engineers, pharmacists, business owners, lawyers, and other well-educated parents. DHS used to have over 1400 students when the town census was 38,000 folks. Now the town has 55,000 people and DHS has less than a 1,000 kids and struggles to stay a 6A football program. We had an outstanding football & basketball program winning State Championships in both sports, thanks to Coach Earl Webb and Earl Morris (legendary BB coach). I can't wait for he new high school to be built. My kids don't believe me when I tell them my high school had no air conditioning. It was added a few years later. Decatur is a nice small town.

Where are you getting your information? Decatur Heritage is a very small private school. A lot of kids from our church go there. They get a good academic education but they are sheltered and lack social skills. They get the kids whose parents think they are too good for private school and the kids who have been in bad trouble and parents put them there are a last resort. No one in Decatur moves to Hartselle. People from Lawrence County move to Hartselle. Decatur has two 6A schools Decatur and Austin. Both are very competitive in sports.

I agree with you about Madison. It is very nice but expensive.

Some of the folks I went to school with live in Hartselle, Priceville, or Madison. They are lawyers, doctors,  business people, etc. Check the state scores for schools, Decatur is average, Hartselle, Madison, & Cullman rank much higher. I hate it, but Decatur has slipped badly for reasons you have already stated. Coach Webb, the excellent football coach, got so fed up with the turmoil in DHS he retired early, moved to Priceville, and sold real estate. This was around 1978-80, before you moved there. Coach Earl Morris retired and left to coach at Sparkman (I think). Not saying Decatur is a dump, but it has regressed academically with the schools. The numbers are the numbers. Would I live there again, maybe on the SW side out towards Chapel Hill Road, but my kids are grown. By the way, I lived on Chapel Hill Road back around 1971, it was totally in the country. My grandfather had a farm there.

I live off of Danville Road very close to Chapel Hill. I agree the scores have gone down. IMO the scores do not tell the whole story.

Decatur has Magnet schools and Baccalaureate Programs. Advanced classes are very popular with high schools wanting to increase their ACT scores and earn college credits. They also have huge special ed programs and work with Calhoun CC with trade school type programs for those that are not college material. Decatur and Austin both have new high schools under construction.

Sounds like Moadus Road area. Used to be a neat little 9 hole golf course off Moadus called Green Acres. Fine little course where my dad taught me and my brothers the game. I'm sure they sold it at a huge profit for homes.

I live between Modaus and Chapel Hill.

The only golf course in the SW since I moved here was Cedar Ridge. It was an 18 hole course. It was down Modaus road. It was short, tight and small turtle shell greens. I rarely played there. They sold the land recently and that is where the new Austin High School is being built.

I bet that's the same course because I heard they expanded about 20-25 years ago.
