Click here for linkBIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Jefferson County Sheriff Mike Hale will lay off 101 deputies and 38 support personnel and close four substations next month to make up for a proposed $6.5 million reduction to his fiscal 2012 budget, according to figures released Monday from his office.
If that happens, the number of deputies assigned to patrol, detective, evidence collection, vice and narcotics duties will drop from 251 to 150, Chief Deputy Randy Christian said. The rest of the county's 461 deputies -- down from 565 two years ago -- have constitutional duties such as staffing the jail, serving court papers and serving felony arrest warrants, and those positions can't be cut further, Christian said.
