Surprise Firing of College Basketball Coach

I am stunned to see him fired. Good coach. He won 73% of his games. He made the Final Four twice.

Thad Matta will no longer be the men's basketball coach at Ohio State, effective immediately, the university announced Monday.

Athletic director Gene Smith said a conversation between him and Matta led to the determination that a change was needed.

Matta, who will turn 50 in July, had been the Buckeyes' coach for 13 seasons. He went 337-123, winning at least 20 games in every season but 2016-17. Ohio State was ineligible for the postseason in Matta's first season, 2004-05, but the Buckeyes went to the NCAA tournament in nine of the next 10 seasons.

I guess Ohio State thinks they should be in the Final Four every year. More info on Thad Matta:

On March 12, 2015, he set a school record for victories, winning his 298th game for OSU after defeating Minnesota in the Big Ten Tournament.[1]

Matta has led the Buckeyes to five Big Ten Conference regular season championships, four Big Ten Tournament titles (2007, 2010, 2011 and 2013), two Final Four appearances (2007 and 2012), and the 2008 NIT Championship.

You could be right about his physical condition. He had major back surgery and has had some real setbacks in recent years. Hope he can get well physically.

The Ohio State men’s basketball team will enter the 2017-18 season with a new head coach. The question is who? Buckeye Sports breaks down a list of candidates ranging from realistic options to guys Ohio State seems to have no chance of landing as a replacement to Thad Matta.

Brad Stevens
This is another no-go. In just four seasons as the head coach of the Boston Celtics, Stevens has taken a 57-loss team and turned it into a 53-win squad. Much like Donovan, Stevens, 40, is enjoying the professional ranks and does not appear to be interested in returning to the college level.

No way the 55-year-old Villanova head coach leaves a basketball hotbed like the city of Philadelphia to try to clean up the mess that is Ohio State hoops.

Wow. I guess Ohio State ain't such a hot opening after all.

Creighton coach Greg McDermott announced he is staying with the Bluejays, where he’s been for the past seven seasons.

McDermott was offered the head coaching job at Ohio State after a meeting Wednesday night.

"I’m blessed and honored to be the coach at Creighton,” McDermott tweeted, “and am looking forward to many more great years in Omaha!”

Interesting choice. Not sure about this one.

Ohio State will announce Chris Holtmann as its next head coach, according to a person with direct knowledge of the situation. The person requested anonymity because the school had not announced the hire yet.

Holtmann, who replaces Thad Matta in Columbus, just guided Butler to the Sweet 16 this past season. Butler has reached the NCAA tournament in all three seasons with Holtmann as head coach in the post-Brad Stevens era.
