They play against each other every year. They compete for the same kinds of athletes in recruiting. And both programs have an identity – Bobby Petrino’s pro-style passing attack and Nick Saban’s touted defense.
But both coaches talked about expecting the unexpected in this game, which will open Southeastern Conference play for both teams.
Asked if Alabama’s offense has looked conservative because it is starting a new quarterback this season, Petrino wasn’t sure AJ McCarron had anything to do with it.
“It looks like … they’ve been preparing for our game,” Petrino said. “That’s always the thing you wonder when you go into this game – what is that they’ve shown and what is it that they’re really going to do.”
Saban said Arkansas has a ton of weapons on offense and lot of ways to use them.
“It’s typical NFL style,” Saban said. “They’re going to do it some way different that you didn’t practice it. … Well, last year we weren’t very adaptable relative to the knowledge and experience that we had.
“I think we have a little better knowledge and experience and I hope we’ll make better adjustments in this game and not make those kinds of mental mistakes.”
