TUSCALOOSA, Alabama - Florida beat reporter Rachel George, who writes for the Orlando Sentinel, has agreed for the second year in a row to answer questions heading into the Gators' game against Alabama.
The third-ranked Crimson Tide (4-0, 1-0) travels to No. 12 Florida (4-0, 2-0) for a 7 p.m. kickoff Saturday at Florida Field.
The Tide is coming off an impressive 38-14 win against then-No. 14 Arkansas. The Gators rolled a 48-10 win at Kentucky.
George will answer our questions throughout the week.
Thanks again, Rachel for providing this video from Will Muschamp's response to a Star Wars reference. Classic video.
Question: It appeared quarterback John Brantley's career would never live up to expectations. Has he improved under Charlie Weis, and what's different about him this season?
Rachel George: Briefly, yes, he is better. Although statistically, his numbers are comparable to last year at this time. Through four games, he has matched last year's total of six TDs. He's thrown two interceptions, one more than last year. And he's got 752 yards passing this year as opposed to 700 last year. Brantley's completion percentage is actually lower (63.9 percent this year vs. 68.2).
So why would anyone think he's better? He's more confident, he's making better decisions and he's got Charlie Weis. Last year was brutal for Brantley, who took more than his share of the blame for the struggles on offense. It's no secret that his confidence took a huge hit and he did consider transferring.
But Weis came in and has done his most work on rebuilding Brantley's confidence, helping him move past a bad play (or game) and having more composure in the pocket. By all accounts, Brantley is in command of the offense and has become a vocal leader in his senior season. Even in interviews, he's a little more at ease and sounds a more confident in explaining the offense.
