A police spokesperson confirmed that Washington, 22, was booked into the Jackson County Jail on those charges overnight Sunday. That person posted a $3,500 bond and was released. No other information was provided.
UGA spokesman Claude Felton said, “Coach Richt is aware of it. Not other news as of now.”
Washington’s arrest is the first of a football team member for 2011. The standard athletic association punishment for a misdemeanor arrest is a suspension for 10 percent of competition. That would mean Washington will likely miss at least this Saturday’s game at Tennessee.
Washington was coming off the best game of his career. The 6-foot-4, 270-pounder junior from Hephzibah had two sacks and four tackles in Georgia’s 24-10 win over Mississippi State on Saturday. With a team-high 3.5 sacks on the season, he would have been counted on heavily in next Saturday’s game against against the Vols, who lead the SEC in passing.
