Driver Dan Wheldon killed in 15-car crash at the Las Vegas Indy 300 Race

LAS VEGAS (AP) — IndyCar driver Dan Wheldon was killed after his car went sailing through the air during a massive 15-car wreck early in Sunday’s Las Vegas Indy 300.

Indianapolis 500 winner Wheldon, in line to win $5 million had he won the race, was injured when his car flew over another on the Lap 12 wreck and apparently caught part of the catch fence just outside of Turn 2.

Wheldon was transported to a hospital in a helicopter after a crash early in Sunday’s Las Vegas Indy 300. Officials announced he died.

Paul Tracy, who was involved in the wreck, said a team of doctors was working on Wheldon, but there was no word of his injuries. A helicopter lifted off from the speedway, and an IndyCar official confirmed Wheldon was onboard.

Pippa Mann and J.R. Hildebrand were transported to a hospital after complaining of dizziness, and Will Power because of back pain.

   Prayer goes out to his family and other drivers in crash.

Dan Wheldon, a two-time winner of the Indianapolis 500, died Sunday afternoon after a 15-car wreck at a race in Las Vegas. The video above, posted on the North American Racing League’s YouTube channel, begins with shots from the roof of Mr. Wheldon’s car and then pans out to show the enormous pile-up that tore race cars into piece and swallowed some of them in flames.

This video, shows the same deadly crash, at the Indy 300 race, in slow motion, as two cars from the front of the pack collide and many of the drivers behind, unable to stop at such high speeds, careen right into the spinning wreckage.

Open wheel racing is so much more dangerous the the Nascar cars, I'm surprised they still even race them anymore. When they have an accident it is usually very bad.
