By the time the 2012 season kicks off — give or take a month either way — a decision should be made on what shape major college football’s postseason will take beginning in 2014.  What that shape will be, though, remains to be seen.

The Big Ten reportedly favors a four-team playoff in which the semifinal games are played on campus.  Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott publicly acknowledged earlier this month that he too favors a four-team playoff, with the berths consisting of only conference champions.

It’s that latter stipulation being tossed around as a possibility that could cause consternation among some conference commissioners and school presidents as the game’s leaders attempt to reshape the postseason.  Simply put, the “conference champions-only” idea is viewed as an anti-SEC tack, a knee-jerk reaction to the all-SEC Alabama-LSU title game following the 2011 season.

The PGA used to "Tiger-proof" golf courses (or so they thought). I guess the NCAA will try to "Bama-proof" the NC playoffs (or so they think).

Yeah, it's amazing what success can do to the rule book. We had a very good fisherman in our bass club and every year they would twist the tournament rules around to try and beat him. I finally told them that to just restrict him to fishing in his bathtub on tournament day and I still liked his chances of winning the tournament.

Conference champions only would be bad for the SEC, and college football.  If a team goes the season undefeated and loses in its conference championship game to a 3-loss team in overtime, should that team be precluded from the championship game?  I think not.  I think the 4 best teams during the course of the season should play it out -- conference championship games are not intended to be championship game play-ins, especially when some conferences don't have championship games.  Also, if two teams from the same conference happen to be two of the best teams in the country, they both should be in the playoff.

I also think home field advantage should not be part of the system.  The national champion should be the best team, period, not the team that can win with home field advantage.  The Big10 excuse for poor bowl performance ("it was the nice weather"), is just an excuse.  Let them play in the heat and humidity of an SEC September game. 

Funny how these conferences are trying to change the playing field now that the SEC has the upper hand.  When the tables were reversed, and large city voting blocks gave the advantage to northern schools, we didn't hear a peep.  Instead, the SEC went out and proved it on the field.  Just like these schools should be required to do if they think they deserve to be called the "Best."
