The University of Alabama's athletic department was the most profitable in the nation during the 2010-2011 academic year, according to Department of Education data compiled by BusinessofCollegeSports.com.
The website broke down the net income (expenses subtracted from revenues) for both public and private universities and found that UA brought in a net income of $31.6 million in the 2010-2011 academic year, more than $20 million more than the second most profitable program in the Southeastern Conference, the University of Arkansas ($11.2 million).
Alabama was the only SEC school in the top ten of the most profitable list, with Arkansas, LSU, Florida and Georgia making up Nos. 11-14 on the list. Mississippi State came in at No. 18 on the list with a net income of $6.3 million, while Vanderbilt's $5.7 million net income from athletics put them at No. 20 on the list.
