Ely 'improved a lot' in spring practice, Nick Saban says of Tide's backup QB

In the recent A-Day Game, Ely shared snaps with Sims on the White team, which won 24-15. Ely completed 10 of 18 passes for 83 yards and no touchdowns. He did not have a pass intercepted. Sims completed 9-12 passes for 135 yards and two touchdowns and did not have a pass intercepted. McCarron completed 29-42 passes for 304 yards and two touchdowns, but three of his passes were intercepted.

"We've always been a little bit one quarterback short in terms of numbers, so all those guys developing is the only way that we can have the kind of depth that we need at that position."

I hate PS had to leave. but if Ely and Morris develop well, we should be in good hands if, God forbid, AJ gets hurt.

I think, if AJ gets injured, we will be in a world of hurt.  Bama will have to rely on its young defense and its rushing game.  Bowl eligible?  Sure.  BCS Bowl?  I don't think so, not without AJ or Sims.

I agree. It is the same at all positions but most acutely true at QB: a backup QB that is good enough to make you feel safe about keeping bama in contention for titles, should the starter get hurt, can start at 20 other big time programs.

I think there will be intense focus on developing these 2, if I know CNS. With PS gone, Saban is not about to leave anything to chance. Ely and Moore will have Nussmeier's full attention this fall.

Phillip Ely is on our team for a reason. He can play. He will get all the reps he needs in fall practice to come in if something happens to AJ. I think our QB position is in good shape.
