"Can Texas A&M and Missouri cut it in the SEC?"

Missouri wasn't ready when the Big 12 started in 1996. That's the candid assessment of Missouri Athletics Director Mike Alden, who arrived in 1998 and says the school waited too long to invest money into budgets, recruiting and facilities.

Many years of mediocrity followed. During 16 years in the Big 12, Missouri captured two division titles in football and won the conference tournaments in men's basketball and baseball during its final season.

So Missouri reassessed its facilities, recruiting and fundraising upon agreeing to join the SEC. The university wants to meet the reality of joining perhaps the nation's most competitive conference.

"I think we'll be competitive," Alden said. "I say that with humility in that I think that our program and our coaches and our kids have done a great job of being very competitive. ... Our kids know, our coaches know, that we have to step up our game." ...

I think the two teams will represent their schools well but I don't see either of them winning a conference title in the near future.

I do see them being a spoiler for some teams fighting for a conference title though and it could happen this year.

I think Texas A&M can be a force in the SEC in football. They can recruit Texas talent and being in the SEC helps open the door to the states of Louisiana & Mississippi for recruiting and maybe even Alabama & Georgia. I think Missouri is in trouble and will be more like USC, they have fielded some good teams but overall they struggle. Where is Missouri going to get the talent they need to compete in the SEC? Kansas, Iowa, Illinois, & Nebraska are pretty barren when you are looking for numbers in 4 & 5 star talent. I really don't see major talent from Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, or Texas going to Missouri to play.

The short answer to the questions is "No," at least in football.

In basketball, baseball, and other sports, these schools will be very competitive.
