Alabama's Nick Saban and Auburn's Gene Chizik are arguably the two best recruiters in college football, but the secret to their recruiting success may come through very different tactics.

Rivals.com conducted a survey of many of the nation's top football recruits at their Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge in Atlanta last week to find out what they thought of some of the nation's top college coaches, and both Saban and Chizik came up often during the survey.

Recruits named Saban the most intimidating coach they've dealt with by an overwhelming margin (he received 30 votes compared to just five votes for the second-place coach, Lane Kiffin.) One player, speaking anonymously, said "He doesn't do any type of grinning, smiling or laughing - none of that. He is what people say he is - strictly business." ........

I wonder what the recruits of today would think of having Coach Bryant towering over many of them with his gruff, to-the-point, no B.S. approach to playing at Alabama while recruiting them? They would be cowering under the couch and be saying what a pussycat Nick Saban is.

Right, Bryant and his reputation were bigger than life. But he also was a charmer who talked to recruits about making their mamas proud and gave them a few down-home stories, often about how poor and humble his life had been in Arkansas. Once the player was signed, that's when things got scary.

I'll bet he was VERY intimidating to recruits, albeit unintentionally.  I met with him several times, and (despite being a mature graduate student) I was intimidated.  But I'm sure he was charming to the parents during in-house visits, especially the Mamas.

I'll bet he was VERY intimidating to recruits, albeit unintentionally.  I met with him several times, and (despite being a mature graduate student) I was intimidated.  But I'm sure he was charming to the parents during in-house visits, especially the Mamas.

I read that Coach Bryant almost never talked to the recruit. He spent most of his time talking to their mamas, telling them he would make them a man and would watch after their son like they were his own son.
