PSU in Perspective: Why "Why" Matters When What's Done is Done

So, to recap. At every turn in this pathetic and tragic story, people failed to do what they should have done, and caused people to do what they had to do. What had to be done was eventually done, but for the wrong reasons.

The fab four should have done more to prevent Sandusky from abusing kids. When they got too deep into it the police had to to step in. When they should have admitted they mishandled things, they lied instead. So the DA had to prosecute them for perjury. When the university should have been looking into the matter proactively, they didn't. In the end, they fired 3/4 of the fab four because they had to. When the facts were laid out for them, the PSU BOT should have apologized, self-imposed significant penalties on the football program and athletic department, they didn't. Instead, they put the NCAA in the position in which it literally had no choice but to levy severe penalties on PSU. Having failed to do what they should have, PSU had no choice but to go along with the NCAA sanctions. Any of these things that had to happen, could have happened for the right reason, but they all happened for the wrong reason.

From the start of this thing PSU has literally missed every chance it had to do the right thing, at the right time, for the right reason. They came close on the Freeh report, and one could be generous and credit them with taking down the statue, but that's about it.

By forcing the NCAA to act, they can still maintain they they did nothing wrong and that there is nothing wrong with their program. They can maintain their view of themselves as saints, persecuted by a rapacious media satisfying the appetite for blood among those who envy Penn State's greatness. The president and BOT can maintain the illusion that they fought back even more severe penalties. All of this looks great from the inside looking out. But from the outside looking in, it just looks like Penn State, hasn't "gotten it", doesn't get it, and never will "get it".
