Railroad Park, Birmingham in dispute over debt
The foundation that developed and operates downtown's Railroad Park is asking the city of Birmingham for an additional $3.2 million it says it needs to retire its construction debt and help pay operating expenses.
Railroad Park Foundation officials say a mix-up in the agreement regarding the city's funding commitment has left that amount unpaid, but officials in Mayor William Bell's office say there's no confusion, and the city has met its obligation to the park.
Foundation president Will French said in a recent letter to Bell that the foundation went into the project and drew up budgets assuming that the city would provide $7.5 million to build the park. The city also agreed to provide, and provided, $100,000 in matching money for a grant.
