Alabama lands commitment from JUCO guard Algie Key

We are starting to get our scholarship numbers where they need to be. We have a good group coming back along with two inside recruits and Key who looks like a scorer at 17.6 pts per game.

Just days after picking up a commitment from Tulane transfer Ricky Tarrant, the Alabama basketball team picked up another experienced guard with the commitment of junior college combo guard Algie Key. The 6-foot-4, 175-pound star from Barton County Community College in Kansas chose the Crimson Tide on Monday over offers from TCU and Georgia after taking an official visit to Tuscaloosa over the weekend.

As a sophomore, Key averaged 17.6 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 4.4 assists. He will have two seasons of eligibility remaining.

Sounds god but it usually takes these JUCO's a year to get used to the speed of the game in the SEC. Lord knows we could use some offense.

This blog post was made prior to Key committing to Bama but I am posting it now because it provides the best description of Key's style of play I have read.

Key averaged 17.6 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists this past season at Barton. The consensus opinion on him from the recruiting nerds is that he is a "slasher/distributor" type player with a good mid-range game. The perimeter game could use some work though (only 5-34 from 3-pt this past season). Key set the Barton record for free throws attempted and made so he obviously knows how to get to the line. His 6 boards a game also suggests that he isn't afraid to mix it up with the big guys in the paint. Assist to turnover ratio was 2:1 and he averaged just under 2 steals per game. He looks capable of playing anywhere from the 1-3 spot on the floor depending on the situation. Seems like he would be a good fit for Grant's system.

Agreed, but you do need a rebounder and someone who can defend the lane/goal. We have to get some offensive production from the post... that also opens up the lane for driving/slashing penetration.

Big guys need to clear the lane for driving, then follow in for rebounds or put backs. It is a timing thing, that along with knowing where a iss will probably come off the rim, comes from hours and years of playing basketball-- not handball. HTH

We only played one big guy at a time last year. Over 50% of our drives started with a big man screen at the top of the key. The 3 second rule keeps post players from camping in the lane. The reason the lane is blocked is from defenders who play a sagging defense daring us to try and shoot over them. Until we get both an inside and outside game our offense will continue to struggle.
