Comparing is nothing but opinions of each but it can make for good conversation. There's no way to say who is the better unless they played each other and that will never happen. Some of you amaze me with your memories of things that happened in each of those years though, good stuff.

Just for fun I looked back on the 1979 team record and stats to see if my memory of how dominate they were is correct. The team was 12-0 and had one close call, a 3-0 win over LSU at Baton Rouge. They beat everyone else pretty good. The defense was awesome. They had 5 shutouts and only allowed two teams to score double digits. They gave up 67 points the entire season for a 5.6 avg. They are the last team in the NCAA to allow fewer than 100 points in a season. For comparison the 92 team gave up 122 (9.2 avg) and 2011 gave up 106 (8.2 avg).

The offense was good too. They scored 30 or more points seven times and averaged 32 points per game.

My friend and high school teammate, Steve Whitman, was a captain along with Don McNeal of that team.

The 1979 team was great, but we had a soft schedule. In 1977 & 1978 we had played Nebraska & USC each year. Personally, I have always thought the 1977 & 1978 teams superior to the 1979 team.

Whitman was a pretty tough dude. Does he live in the Centerville area now?

It was a soft schedule. It shows how things change. We played Ga Tech, Baylor, Va Tech and Miami in non conference play and they were all terrible. We only played three teams that year that were ranked in the final poll.

Those 77 and 78 were loaded. Jeff Rutledge and I were friends. We grew up playing little sports together. He went to Banks HS which was our rival. Jeff was a great athlete. If we had run a passing attack his name would be all over the record books. Three guys I played HS ball with were on those teams. Phil Allman, Alan Crumbley and Steve Whitman.

Yep, we had Ozzie on the 1977 team along with seniors Bob Cryder, Johnnie Davis, & Terry Jones.  This team was so deep with juniors & sophomores it was incredible.

You could keep on naming great players from the 77, 78 & 79 teams. Two more of my favorites were Tony Nathan and Dwight Stephenson.

Pmull, that 3-0 LSU game was played in a game-long driving rain storm. People were slipping & sliding all over the pacle. I think that was the only reason that game was close.
