Wenonah PG Justin Coleman committed to CAG and Alabama this morning. He is a top 100, four star recruit and is the # 1 rated player in the state. This is a big pick up for the Tide. He was being recruited by many SEC schools including the barn, arky, Vandy and UT.

This is being reported by Cecil Hurt on twitter and on the Alabama Scout site. A story should be out slortly.

Quote
The 2013 Class 5A All-State point guard led the Dragons to a rare third consecutive Class 5A state championship at the BJCC earlier this year.  Coleman averaged 21 points, eight assists and 4.2 steals per game this year at Wenonah.

"I just made that decision today because I really liked coach (Anthony) Grant and his style and the trust they put in me," he said. "I feel like it is the right and perfect school for me."

He is believed to be Alabama's first verbal commitment for the Class of 2014.

This is huge for CAG and the team considering all of the negative things that have been happening to the them.   Applause E-Cred

I agree with you Jamos. We needed some good news recruiting wise.

There are still a few very good uncommitted in state recruits that have played AAU with Coleman. They have said they want to play college ball together. Hopefully we can get all these guys signed in the early signing period.

(BTW I merged our threads since they were on the same topic)

This is a great pick-up for CAG. He really seems to do a good job recruiting even though the teams don't always play to their potential. He's definitely had his share of misfortunes. I hope this year is the turnaround year that the CAG and the BB team needs.

I'm still a little shaky about the situation in our BB program. Good recruiting doesn't mean much if you can't keep the players on board or they don't develop. This is a huge year if you ask me.

Bama isn't the only school that has lost players because of ego problems. This trend of players just transfering because they aren't getting their way should be addressed by the NCAA. I still believe that CAG will turn this mess around though, I'm awful anxious to see this years team. If the leadership picks up where it left off at the end of last season we just might be in for a fun season.

How many teams have 9 scholarship players after the coach has been on the job going on 5 years? I don't think we have had 12 players since he took over, especially the last 3 years. This is why I am shaky.

It has to be hard coaching these kids, in the digital age, things move fast, they want the next thing.  (Phillip Sims  has left Virginia and is at a Division II school.)  It's happening across the country, especially in basketball, to a lesser degree in football, where it is harder.

I think some of these kids who left were Gottfried recruits, though Lacey leaving was a tough blow.  There wasn't much senior leadership, the opposite really, the younger players were more disciplined.

Hopefully things are heading in the right direction.  I don't think this is a make or break year, but it is a big one.

Yeah, it's been a crazy 3 years. The odds have to be in his favor this year, you would think, because they haven't been to date. I hope he and the assistants can coach them up. The team has never had a big man that made an impact with the exception of Jacobs his freshman year, but he was inconsistent at best. He did, however, show some improvement toward the end of last year. That has taken a toll on the rest of the team. Once the opposition learned that, they played zone which forced a lot of missed shots from the perimeter.

They have experience coming back, but they'll need help from the young guys to make it to the dance.

I like the team we have coming back. Lacey is the only player that left that may be missed. Losing Pollard and Gueye is no big deal. Neither showed me much. A healthy Engstrom will be an upgrade from Gueye. I am hoping Hale and Taylor can combine to give us Engstom and Jacobs help in the paint. I think CAG signed the JUCO transfer Algie Key to help fill the void Lacey left.

I also think the trip to Europe is a very good thing for our team. They leave on 8/10. In addition to the games they will get 10 practices.

I agree this is an important year for CAG but I would not put him on the hot seat. His record is pretty good. He has not got us to the NCAA but once but it is hard to complain about his SEC record.

2013  23-13  12-6

2012  21-12  9-7

2011  25-12  12-4

2009  17-15  6-10

Total  86-52  39-27

I have seen improvement in his teams each year. I don't know who we could hire that could do any better. I know plenty of coaches who could do much worse.
