He didn't get much action as a freshman, but Jonathan Allen will almost certainly see more in Year 2. Jack linebacker remains a possible position (as with JUCO transfer D.J. Pettway). Either way, he'll be on the edge of the defense with a hand in the dirt and he has the talent. A consensus 5-star recruit from Leesburg, Va., Allen played in 12 games and was listed behind Pagan on the defensive end depth chart.
But, in the era of the mobile quarterback and fast-paced offenses, he could be a strong answer at defensive end. Allen is about 30 pounds lighter (and more mobile) than Pagan, who left a year early for the NFL. He could be an asset when facing the HUNH teams like Ole Miss, Auburn, Texas A&M and others. "I was happy with my freshman year," Allen said after the Sugar Bowl. "There's a lot of room for improvement. I still have to keep working and keep grinding. So I'm happy with it, but nowhere near satisfied." ...
