Interesting article.

Quote
The question had to be asked because Alabama doesn't lose 19 games in a basketball season.

That never happened to Mark Gottfried or David Hobbs or Wimp Sanderson.

It hadn't happened since 1969 when C.M. Newton's first team went 4-20, but there were much brighter days ahead.

The question had to be asked because Anthony Grant's fifth season at Alabama ended Thursday night with a lackluster 68-56 loss to LSU, and Alabama doesn't go one-and-done in the SEC Tournament.

It hadn't happened since 2007, and this was the first time it had happened to Grant.

The question had to be asked so I asked it. Is there any doubt in Grant's mind that he'll be back next year?

I don't envy Bill Battle for the decision he has to make, if there is a decision to make in his mind.  By all accounts Anthony Grant is a respectable man and a good coach.  For whatever reason though he's not getting the job done at Bama and is actually regressing rather than improving.

Does he need new assistants?  Is it fixable if Grant stays?  How much damage will be done if he stays and next year is as bad as this year?

Personally, I don't think it is fixable. Sure, we might go 17-14, 18-13 in the regular season, but is that real improvement, especially if the SOS goes to say 60th or 70th, instead of a Top 25 schedule? Do I think he will be fired, no, we are stuck on this sinking ship to the bloody end. Like always, I hope I am wrong.

I think Grant gets another year.

My biggest concern with CAG has been his lack of ability to recruit and develop post player. At the first of the year I thought Taylor was another project like Engstrom and Gueye. However, Taylor really improved as the year went on. His defense and rebounding got better but so did his offense. The last few games he was making plays around the basket that looked good. I'm not sure how much of that is hard work and coaching or  him just getting used to the college game. He is a much player player now than at mid-season. A good off season program to put on a few pounds and more strength and he the potential to be a good player. He needs to work all summer on free throws.

Hale also improved as the season went on. He has a decent outside shout but he knows how to get to the rim. I really like him. We should see a lot of improve from year one to two with Hale and Taylor. Both need to bulk so they can beat and bang with the player players in the SEC.

CAG is looking for a big guy in the late signing period. See this link on a couple of the guys we are going after. Click here for link

I have said many times we have three good freshmen and two transfers that will competing for playing time and add depth for next year. We will look like a totally different team next year. I see more balanced scoring in the line up.

No one is happy about this year but I do see a plan in place that should produce much better results.

On a sad note I hate to see Releford graduate. He was a 4 year starter and played hard each game. He has his place in the record books that show he is one of the better players to ever put on the Alabama uniform. I have a tremendous amount of respect for him as a player and young man.
