"Alabama swimmer dies in tornado"

University of Alabama officials confirmed Tuesday that a member of the school's men's swimming and diving team was killed Monday night when violent storms and a tornado struck the Tuscaloosa area.

John Servati, 21, a junior swimmer and dean's list student at Alabama, was killed, according to school officials...

John Servati died a hero. Held up a concrete wall long enough for his girlfriend to get out from under it before it collapsed again on him.

John's mom told our team this morning he always wanted to be an Alabama swimmer, and he always wanted to be a hero. He accomplished both.

John Servati, a student who had been in one of my discipleship groups all year this year and who was going to Lake Tahoe summer project this summer died last night in the storms that passed through Tuscaloosa. We're devastated but trusting the Lord's sovereignty & good plan. He was on the Bama swim team and well known on campus. Although so sad, I'm comforted as I think about how much he had grown in his faith this year and I have no doubt he's with Jesus. Please pray for us as we mourn and seek to minister to many students who are mourning and confused. And of course pray for his family.

He and his girlfriend went to her basement during the storm. When a rush of water poured into the basement, the walls collapsed on them. He was able to push the wall up so his girlfriend could get out from under the wall, but he was not able to do so. When the responders arrived, they were able to pull his girlfriend out with no injuries; however, John had died.

I agree 1000000%.  No disrespect intended but, the term "Hero" is frequently used to describe our police and fire fighters but honestly, they are paid to do what they do.  This young man did what he did to save another without any pay whatsoever.  He truly is a hero...
