The recipients of the award were Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox, Charlie Stinson, Amanda Phillips, Derek and Susan Debruin, and UA Greek Relief. Patrick Morris accepted the award on behalf of Greek Relief. Maddox and the DeBruins were not able to attend the ceremony.
Charlie Stinson: "Cadet Stinson is a member of the UA Army ROTC and a medic of the Army Reserve. Immediately following the storm, Charlie worked to help find the wounded and provide medical attention, often using his own clothing as bandages. As darkness fell, he made his way to DCH to assist medical personnel there. As one nominator described it, Charlie was a beacon of light and leadership for those around him."
Alabama football coach Nick Saban said that remembering the lives lost in the storm and the reaction of the community should inspire people to appreciate their lives and serve others.
"I think that I'm so proud to be a part of a community that took advantage of creating tremendous relationships in response to a terrible tragedy to try to help other people," Saban said.
Saban linked great leadership with the willingness to serve, pointing to Jesus Christ.
The Crimson Tide team will wear ribbon stickers on their helmets every game this season to honor storm victims as well as those who have helped in recovery. Although football can be a diversion, Saban said, it can also raise awareness for every person who attends a game, and he hopes the team will continue to positively affect the community.
