San Antonio Texas high school football players target ref

The players were ejected from the game. They are suspended from the team pending an investigation into the incident. The issue will be addressed Tuesday morning.

The disturbing comment in the written statement below is that the school spokesman says "it does not appear the athletes intentionally tackled the referee". What video replay is he watching?

NISD spokesman Pascual Gonzales issued this written statement on Sunday:

This incident is extremely disturbing, not the sportsman like behavior we teach students at Northside ISD. We are cooperating with the UIL investigation. We will handle this incident on Tuesday morning and schedule a due process hearing which will include formal interviews with coaching staffing , the students themselves and other athletes, anyone who has knowledge of whatever was seen.

The bottom line is, Northside will not tolerate this type of behavior. It does appear the athletes intentionally tackled the referee, but we have not confirmed it.

Was I shocked to see this? Yes. Am I surprised? No. In the years I have been officiating, player conduct and coach conduct have been on the decline. I have never been in a situation where I felt threatened on the field, but I felt something like this would eventually happen. Along with the school district, the Texas athletics association and the National Association of Sports Officials are investigating. I doubt seriously you will ever see these two suit up again. I know I would press charges. This is clearly assault.

The investigation has surfaced that one of the assistants created this monster. I would expect him to be fired, charged along with the players, and possibly even having his teaching certificate pulled. The higher ups are not going to let this slide - it would send a chilling message and create a message that it is OK to do this. I am fully confident since the NASO is involved (the national association of all sports officials), the hammer is going to drop.

Hey Carl, good to see you back again. I did not know you officiated games but my compliments to you. I know when I played Refs could change a game quickly. We played Lineville High School over in Clay County back in 1971 I think it was and we scored on the same play 5 times and they called it back every time. Our coach Harlan Robinson was on the field in our huddle challenging us to score on the same play every time. When I see honest Refs you will see a great game. You guys do a very hard but exceptional job. RTR!

Since this happened close to where we live, our local media have been all over it. The latest reported is that the two offending players have been expelled and sent to the 'alternative' school for their district. They both reported to this school today.

No. They were both dismissed from their football team. There are no sports programs at their NEW school
