Alabama goes 5-0 with Osorio starring on mound, Hemphill at the plateOsorio got the season off to a great start with a perfect game, the fourth in Alabama history, as she put Coastal Carolina down without a baserunner. She struck out an Alabama record 19 batters in the gem.
The next day she came back in relief and pitched 4 2/3 innings of perfect ball against Towson, striking out six and earning the victory.
Of the 35 batters she faced in the two games, she struck out 25 of them.
Hemphill made quite an impression in her first weekend with the Tide, hitting .500 (7-14) in her five starts with nine RBIs, a team-leading three home runs, and posting a 1.214 slugging percentage.
She hit a home run in her first career at-bat, a three-run shot against Towson on Friday, and added another three-run homer the next game against Coastal Carolina. She capped the weekend with another long ball on Sunday against host Coastal Carolina, part of a 3-3 day at the plate. She delivered at least one hit in all five games and scored at least one run in four of the five.
Hemphill joins Charlotte Morgan (2007) and Haylie McCleney (2013) as the only players in program history to win Freshman of the Week in the first week of the season.
