Alabama spring football practice is an opportunity for early enrollees

TUSCALOOSA -- While much of the attention in Alabama's spring football practices will focus on the highly anticipated quarterback battle, plenty of newcomers are ready to earn significant playing time, perhaps even starting jobs, beginning Monday.

Here are the five newcomers who will try to make a move this spring:

1. Aaron Douglas. The former Tennessee freshman All-American offensive lineman returns to the SEC after a junior college All-American season at Arizona Western College. Alabama hopes he can compete for, if not win, the left tackle spot vacated by two-year starter James Carpenter. The 6-foot-6, 280-pound Douglas recently pleaded guilty to DUI and was sentenced to 48 hours of jail before being required to complete more than 11 months of supervised probation.

These two early enrollees, Douglas and Williams, were recruited specifically with immediate impact in mind. They can take advantage of not only spring drills but the off-season conditioning program.
