Alabama remains in national title picture as it prepares for Mississippi State

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama -- Alabama returns to today with renewed hope.


With the Game of the Century behind it, the fourth-ranked Crimson Tide must focus on winning its final three games to do its part in chasing the game of the season: the BCS national championship.


It begins Saturday with a 6:45 p.m. game at Mississippi State.


Winning out does not guarantee a ticket to national championship game. Three undefeated teams are ahead of Alabama, but voters Sunday in all major polls kept Alabama at No. 4 -- a higher ranking than undefeated Boise State at No. 5.


The most significant ranking came with Sunday night's BCS standings announcement: Alabama is No. 3 behind No. 1 LSU and No. 2 Oklahoma State.


The message was clear: Voters would prefer an LSU-Alabama rematch over other options.


This after the top-ranked Tigers took a 9-6 overtime victory from the Tide on Saturday night at Bryant-Denny Stadium. The defenses did not allow a touchdown and instead both teams relied on field goals to determine the outcome.

Pretty cool that Bama is in 3rd and potentially in line for a rematch if Oklahoma beats OK State.  I think if Standford beats Oregon, though, they may move ahead of Bama.  While some may think a rematch is unfair, that Bama had its chance, I feel differently, especially after reviewing the interception call on Maze's pass -- I agree with Holtz that it is the interception that wasn't.

Another thing going our way is the fact that the SEC has won 5 in a row.  I think everyone knows what the outcome will be if you put one of these pass happy 50+ points per game teams up against a real SEC defense now.  They might score in the low 20's but, since they don't play defense at all the SEC team always wins.
