TUSCALOOSA, Alabama - The Alabama basketball team will provide a sneak preview at 7 p.m. today with an exhibition game against a team that isn't going to sneak up on the Crimson Tide.

UAH, ranked No. 2 in the preseason NCAA Division II poll, visits Coleman Coliseum for the second consecutive season.

A year ago, the Chargers lost 73-68 in double overtime.

Bama started their season tonight beating UAH 67-60. It wasn't the prettiest game to watch but Bama got a good test from UAH and I think they come away from this game learning a lot about themselves. At times Bama looked like barnburners then at times they looked like they had a lot of underclassmen on the team and they do, Bama started two freshmen tonight.

UAH has a quality basketball program, they are well coached and have some very good shooters on the team, they were firing up some long threes and making them. They gave Bama exactly what Bama needed, a close ball game.

Good report.

So the outside shooting was better?

UAH is a quality Div II school. They took us to Double OT last year. It looks like Greene, Mitchell and Releford played well. Based on the stats it looked like Rodney cooper had the best game of the new guys. He played 29 minutes and had 8 points. Randolph and Lacey's numbers did not look so good. Hankerson had good stats in the few minutes he played.

We get those young guys up to speed and this team will be fun to watch.

UAH coach Lennie Acuff said he appreciates Grant's willingness to be challenged by the Chargers. He's impressed with this Alabama team.

"They're considerably better than they were a year ago," Acuff said. "They shoot it better. They've got multiple shooters. I really think Cooper's going to help them big, and Trevor Lacey's a whale of a player. He's a little out of shape. He'll get in shape. We've seen Trevor for four years in our gym.

Thanks for the report.  It sounds like the freshmen have their work cut out for them.

Good report.

So the outside shooting was better?
Not bad at all: 50% from the floor 41% 3s

Probably that game (Div II) doesn't count in the home win streak.

With Bama shooting so well in the first half, UAH made an adjustment at the half and played a tenacious zone the second half. This really exposed the weakness of the younger players trying to work the ball inside to Green and Mitchell, it was very physical with Green getting one technical called on him. The younger players weren't as quick to pull the trigger from the outside against the zone as I thought they would do, probably because UAH was sagging underneath and made it almost impossible to get an offensive rebound. They learned a lot tonight but will have to learn to trust their shot more against these zones.

This is why this game was so good for Bama because they will see a lot of zone defenses this year and I don't think any of them will be any better than what UAH played. UAH's Smith was the guy that kept the game close, he was deadly from long range and just as deadly from the free throw line.

The fact that we forced them to go zone in the second half is a huge improvement.

Good stuff Jamos. More information than the two articles I read. We have to learn how to attack the zone. We will see a lot of it this year until we either beat it or shoot our way out of it. This was a good oppontent for an exhibition game. You can not learn much from beating an under manned team by 50 points. I did like the comment from the UAH coach who said we are a much better team than they played last year.

I would venture to say CAG saw our weakness tonight and he will build on that no doubt. He is going to take us places we have not been in a long time. RTR!

The link below is an excellant article by RollBamaRoll that has a lot of good information about last nights game.

Quote
•On the offensive end, it is clear that Bama has a much higher ceiling that it ever had last year. Five different players hit 3-pointers in this game alone, and in general the freshmen perimeter players exhibited exactly the kind of playmaking ability that was so sorely lacking last year. Further, JaMychal Green appears to have taken his game to the next level, with his shooting range extending all the way out to the 3-point line. Grant has the pieces on offense that he could only dream about last year. That said, execution on offense was often very sloppy. That extends to not just the freshmen, but also the veterans. Like on the defensive end, there is a lot of work to do on the offensive end.
