His arms folded and eyes trained on the quarterback footwork drill, the Tuesday practice routine appeared no different for Jim McElwain.
Advice came here and there. It was just business as usual for the Alabama offensive coordinator.
There’s just one difference this week.
The clock is ticking on his tenure with the Crimson Tide now that he was hired as the new head coach at Colorado State last week. Part of the deal called for McElwain to lead the Alabama offense in the BCS title game against LSU on Jan. 9.
That meant returning to Tuscaloosa on Sunday after recruiting and building a staff in Fort Collins.
That homecoming brought somewhat of a different McElwain to the first pre-practice team meeting. Senior wide receiver Brandon Gibson said his coordinator of four years got a bit sentimental.
“It was kind of surprising that he did get a little emotional because I’ve never seen him that way. When you have people speaking from their heart that’s how it usually goes.”
