Click here for linkTUSCALOOSA, Alabama -- Evan Smith, owner of the Krispy Kreme at 1400 McFarland Boulevard that was destroyed in the April 27, 2011 tornado, hopes to have a new store built on the same site by May of this year.
The new doughnut shop is planned to have about the same square footage as the old store, but will have a larger seating area. Smith estimated that it will be in the top 10 percent of Krispy Kreme stores in terms of size.
"To the public eye, it's going to be bigger," Smith said.
Smith said he has a site development permit and will apply for a building permit as soon as architectural drawings are complete, which he hopes will be at the end of January. Because of rain and other projects in the area, the store should be open in May or June, just after the first anniversary of the storm that destroyed the old shop.
