DUNEDIN, Fla. -- Atlanta Braves third baseman Chipper Jones will have arthroscopic surgery Monday to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee.

Jones injured the knee Thursday when he slipped while stretching before batting practice. It also was just before his scheduled news conference, where he announced he was planning to retire after this season.

So much for a healthy Chipper.

This was my response in a thread a few days ago about Chipper retiring. Chipper has over stayed his welcome.

This is getting to be like a bad joke. A couple of years ago he missed a lot of games when he pulled a muscle in his side while swinging a bat, then it happened again, now he tears up a knee while stretching. This is like a skit for Saturday Night Live. What next, does he get a hernia while using the bathroom, maybe tear up his shoulder while wiping his rear?

You know, at this point if I were Chipper, I might be sitting back saying, "The Good Lord just MIGHT be trying to tell me something here." Chipper, there is no shame in retiring NOW. Do not tarnish your reputation by clinging to some arrogant ideal of a "farewell tour."
