There is an article on AL.com today about baseball scholarships. NCAA Divison I schools can offer 11.7 scholarships but it takes about 30 players to make up a team. The schools give out portions of scholarships to try and get as many players something as they can. This rule is equal for all Divison I schools.

What gets under my skin is how non-athlectic scholarships come into play. Georgia for instance has the Hope scholarship. A kid maintains a B average in core subjects during high school and his tuition is paid for at Georgia. Baseball offers him a 1/3 scholarship and now he is almost on a full free ride. Most SEC schools outside of Alabama and the barn have gambling money to help kids go to school. That puts Alabama and the barn at a disadvantage in baseball. This was a big deal to Jim Wells when he was coach.

I don't know what can be done about this but SEC sports are supposed to be on a level playing field. It clearly is not in baseball. I'm convienced that is why we struggle in SEC play most years.

The AL.com article talks a little about the 11.7 rule. That article is linked below.

The 11.7 rule makes little sense given a baseball team's roster needs.   And then the rules are different for JUCO?  Whose bright idea was all this?   Undecided

I'm guessing the 11.7 rule game about after Title IX (Gender Equality) was passed. Women sports must get the same scholarship money as men sports so football and basketball are taken care of but the lesser (non-revenue) sports suffer. Meanwhile, girls scholly's are very available. I don't have anything against women's sports, in fact, I support them. But they don't have a cash cow like football taking up 85 scholarships each year.

The 11.7 rule applies to softball as well.

Just looked at Bama's baseball roster, it contains 40 players.

There are 20 on the softball roster.

This has turned into a Title IX debate which is fine but comments on the original topic are also welcome.

It started out as Alabama is getting screwed because we can not give academic scholarships to average students like everyone else can. Other schools are offering baseball players lottery money scholarships along with a small baseball scholarship.

I totally agree with you on the scholarship situation at Bama, you are dead on.  Wink
