The second-ranked Alabama women's golf team saved its best for last Tuesday and finished the first round of the NCAA Championships in first place.

The Crimson Tide's top four golfers combined for six birdies and no bogeys on their last three holes to surge into the lead at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn.

We are off to a great start. The course they are playing in Franklin, TN is the home course for Vandy. Our girls have played there many times. Being familar with a course is a big advantage. We have a long way to go but if the ladies can stay calm and make a few birdies they are capible of winning the championship.

Roll Tide.

The second-ranked Alabama women's golf team has completed its second round and has extended its lead in the NCAA Championships in Franklin, Tenn.

Half of the 24-team field still is on the course at the Vanderbilt Legends Club. Follow the scores here.

The Crimson Tide shot a 3-under-par 285 today, giving it a two-day total of 5-under-par 571.

The four-day, 72-hole tournament ends Friday.

Of the teams that also are finished for the day, second-ranked UCLA is the Tide's closest competitor. The defending champion was 2-over today and is 6-over for the tournament. The Bruins trail Alabama by 11 shots. South Carolina is another shot back. Third-ranked USC, which shot even par today, is 14 shots behind the Tide.

Duke, Arizona State and Virginia are competing this afternoon for second place.

Alabama had a bad day in round 3. The team shot +18 to make their total +13. The 11 shot lead they had to begin the day is now only 2 strokes over USCw. Three other teams are 4 shots back. We still have the lead but we have to play like we did the first two rounds if we want to win the championship trophy.
