Bear Bryant's conditioning workouts in the 60's would pretty much kill you. See the link below to see what a workout included.

No, that's not right.  You will pass out before you die.

True.

Conditioning was different back then. Water breaks were for the weak. Coaches would go to jail today for the difficult practices they ran back then. We know so much more about strength training and hydration today. Back then they just worked your azz off.
I remember running into those guys out on the town after those practices. They'd say beer replenishes their fluids from the heat of their workouts. What they were in fact doing, was dehydrating themselves for the next day. I remember kinda/sorta trying to tell them that. A Bama cross country runner (Wolfman?) was the worst at that.

At least that is what my coaches always told me.    Fortunately I never saw anyone pass out or die, so I just had to take their word for it.

Is that where that came from?  I always heard it from my hs coaches during sprints.

John Hannah tells that story on Coach Bryant. It is on the video with CMM and JH recalling Coach Bryant memories.

I thought it came from Coach Bryant.  You confused me when you attributed it to Hannah.

You are correct.  Hmmm... do you see the connection there?
