Federal troops drop bombs on WV:

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jv6mhVzd6rQ" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jv6mhVzd6rQ</a>

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SpyJtBl0-w4" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SpyJtBl0-w4</a>

Good stuff.  Do you have the next part handy (Part 4)?

You keep posting this stuff and you are going to have me pro union.  Laughing
LOL. I didn't know it got into all that. There was a time when organizing was necessary but the quickly began biting the hand that fed them. When I was growing up, violent mine strikes lasted much too long. The benefits gained by striking never made up for the missed months of work. Now, even in Southern WV non-union mines are operating, but not without violence. Steel balls shot through windsheilds, houses burned, etc.

There was clearly a need for unions back then, but I think now the pendulum has swung the other way.  We probably need some sort of happy medium in place between what happened in the early mining days vs. what is going on in Detroit today.  How many more jobs have to be lost in Detroit before the UAW understands that there are people who would love to have their jobs and are willing to work for a reasonable wage?

On the other hand, there would not have been a need for unions in the first place if the government wasn't so corrupt and willing to look the other way when the companies broke the law.  I'm sure they were breaking laws from the beginning, all the way back to when they first started acquiring the land from the local mountain folks.  It seems the unions were a response to combat corruption, but now they have become corrupt themselves.  The fundamental problem is that people, generally speaking, are wicked, and left unchecked either side will become corrupt in time.

This is why, particularly the coal fields, are so protective against outsiders. The county I live in is one of the most dangeous in the state, so I have little trouble in coal country. But it is down right dangerous for tourist getting off the interstates to laugh at the hilbillies.

I got a couple directional drilling contracts for our company with major coal companies. They drill air shafts as well as core drilling and geological logging. The tickets on these jobs were not large enough for us to dedicate directional drillers. So I farmed the work to a smaller company. But when every job starts up, I have a standard discussion with the DDs and the Toolpushers to pass on to the rig crews (roughnecks). This includes not wearing company logos (coveralls) off the rig sites, staying out of honkey tonks, and generally trying to be invisible.

Wow, that is something you actually have to enforce, so as to make sure none of them embarrasses the company? I guess depending on your workforce, that makes sense.

You completely missed the point I was making. I am trying to make sure those guys don't end up set ablaze in their own car. The oilfield is non-union.

Most West Virginians are big-hearted, generous people. But there are sections of the state where our own people don't go. We allow tourists to come and go, pretty much without mishap in this county, but make no mistake that everyone is armed and many are downright mean. I've said before it is best to stay close to the interstates. Pmull worked in the Beckley area and came away with a good impression of the folks he dealt with.

There is a medley of this with Sweet Home Alabama ("roll tide roll" version) by a bad azz young guitarist from B'Ham. I used to play it from UTUBE but cannot find it any longer.  Huh?

I am going to UNA for the day. It is Homecoming. The parade is at 10:30 and my daughter is riding on one of the floats. She joined Phi Mu and done of the older girls wanted to do it so they make the pledges. They are having a parents day after the parade and serving lunch. The UNA game starts at 6:00. I will be at home watching real football by then.
