Beano Cook, staple of the game, dies

Beano Cook, a longtime staple of the Pittsburgh sports scene and an ESPN college football studio commentator since 1986, has died. He was 81.


The university announced Thursday that Cook had died in his sleep.

Cook, a 1954 University of Pittsburgh graduate, began his career as a sports publicist at the school from 1956 to 1966. He later worked with a number of organizations, including the Pittsburgh Civic Arena.

Cook was a studio commentator for ABC from 1982 to 1985 before joining ESPN. He also worked as ABC's media director from 1966 to 1974. He later worked for the St. Petersburg Times and Miami Dolphins, and was a publicist for CBS Sports.

I remember when Chris Economaki was the big man for being on TV for racing, and Beano Cook was the discussion man for Texas and Alabama. He was really a legend of knowledge of college football. He would really have a ball talking about Notre Dame football, to try and sound like Lindsey Nelson. lol, RTR!

This is sad. Beano was one of the funniest guys on the sports stations and I just loved to hear him get wound up about something. R.I.P.
