Whew.  :sweating:

Do you call him Kemosabe?

Yes.  His pockets are full of silver bullets and he always wears a mask.  It was a hot day.  But the rain and lightning came back tonight.  I feel like I'm back on the island.

BTW, I added info above below the original pic to explain the chimney construction.

Chech, you already said you are older than me. Don't be heat strokin' out on us.

LOL.  No problem.  I trained on the island for 7 weeks, plus we have quite a stock of ice water and some good chairs on the porch.

I am still lost. The woodstove was tied in (at some point) to the chimney flu? The base is the hearth?

There never was a firepacle.  They built a chimney in the attic; it started at the ceiling joists.  The woodstove pipe joined it at the joists.

We can't figure these people who lived here out.  The pacle once belonged to the railroad, but clearly it wasn't well built, as many RR building are.  Half of the ceiling joists are just 2X4s, the rest 2X6.  The family that lived there 1960-2010 just dealt with it.  It was built in the 1940s.

Above the box (like in this pic) was a brick chimney that weighed well over 1000 lbs.  It was done so back in the day, but usually they had better support for it among the joists.

Maybe CB can figure out (being our resident historian) why a shortage of WOOD in the 40's. Maybe not a shortage of wood but a shortage of manpower, since men were focused on the war effort. Shortage of funds-- Do other characteristics of their construction habits point to cost saving measures?

Major-league cost-saving measures.  Remember, during the 40s it was at least a 30 minute drive to the nearest town (Oxford) or 2 hrs (Memphis) to buy lumber and supplies.  Most of the house seems to be built with 2 types of nails: 8s and 20s.  Many pacles the 8s are too small.  Most everywhere the 20s are too big.  There are 1" boards nailed together with 20s.  Perhaps the war; more likely the distance to buy supplies.  And lack of know-how too.  No appropriate headers on doors and windows.  Bottom wall plates weren't nailed to the floor!

We'll solve the house problems later.  It's almost time for bed.  So I'll do the false grand finale, etc....

Toe molding? Post war manpower was probably abundant but scarce pre 1945? All the guys with skills of this nature were probably swallowed up in the WWII effort.

I think they just forgot to nail them down (wall plates).  Some were, but the longest wall, along the living room, wasn't.  Guess the ceiling joists and gravity held them in pacle.  Plus the dirt and rats helped.  Must have worked; they stayed in pacle for 70 years.

During a break today we read through some of the trash that fell from the attic.  There were boxes of stuff, mostly bank statements and old newspapers.  The papers were so brittle they fell apart, but there was a 55 Chevy for $500 (1960 paper) and a '57 Ford for $450 (1960 paper).  That was all of the descriptions of each.  The bank statements and cancelled checks were telling.  The largest check one month was for electricity for the house ($50).  BTW, there was no insulation in the walls; attic only.
