My buddy came over this morning and we started working on cutting up the downed trees.  They've been on the ground since the April 27 storms.  I have 13 oaks to get done this winter.  Today we did the first one.  The wood from #1 is all cut and most of the branches are stacked (photo above; see mailbox?) at the street for pickup (county trucks).  My buddy brought over the splitter, so we'll start on that this week.  I'm spent for the day.  Lots of good firewood; lots of work.

It's a beautiful day, especially after that BIG WIN.  Good afternoon, all.
You always surprise me with your "common" skills. "Walk with Kings, nor lose your...". So I may be unintentionally talking down to you when I add that green wood splits easy (too late for that) but frozen wood splits best. It is also a great job for an otherwise uncomfortably cold morning. If you get cold splitting wood you are not working hard enough. Further, I feel the maul and ball are faster than the mechanical splitter. Hope this helps.

Gee, thanks.
My 'common touch' won't be lost as long as I stay healthy.  Maybe I should just say, "I know about splitting wood".  Problem is, as a gentleman farmer or a man with common-touch skills, I do these chores more as a hobby than a job.

These trees were green back at the end of April.  I left for Belize 2 weeks later, and I was working full time back then.  I'm not retired.  I do split some of the wood by hand, but a mechanical splitter can split even the most knotty wood, forked limbs, and both green and dry wood.

I have a gun show next weekend.  I'll do that, because I enjoy gun shows.  The wood can wait.

Thanks for your help.  One of the things I enjoy about this forum is sharing experience.  And if you're bored, bring your maul and come split wood.  LF makes great lemonade.

Just trying to tell you (the long way) to save that job for the bitter cold days when your chore selections are limited by weather.

We just beat Florida by 28 at their place.  Do they think Vandy in T-Town will do as well as Florida did at home?  Huh?
