Someone was chatting on another thread...about hitting someone so hard it knocks their jockstrap off. First, I may be able to find a 35 year old one from HS...but anyhow...how hard would it take to knock it into the dirt?  Bound to hurt. So it knocks the elasticity right out of it?

A metaphor is a literary figure of speech that uses an image, story or tangible thing to represent a less tangible thing or some intangible quality or idea.

So are some metaphors less graphic, or less scary than others. Take for instance, this jockstrap thing. Gotta hurt. Granted my aforementioned 35 year old jock strap may be on its last legs (I didn't mean legs literally), but for it to go flying off into the dirt, would have to be getting hit pretty dang hard! I think I would quit football if this was even remotely possible.

I had a friend from Texas who told me he had a track scholarship in college.  He said he won the regional hurdles events his first year and went on to nationals.  He qualified for the Olympics.

I asked, "Did you ever play football?"  He was a strapping young man.  "No", he said, "I tried it, but on the first scrimmage I caught a pass and got crushed by a linebacker.  It knocked my teeth loose, and I hit the ground so hard that my eye sockets ached.  I quit that day."

That hard?

Since it's bye week, I'll encourage discussion of a purchase I made at the auction.  It's a travel kit, old.  There is a leather-covered hard case with a lock (why?), brushes made of boar bristles, tortoiseshell comb, ivory handles all around, and silver-capped containers.

I paid $18 (I think) for it.  I can't decide how much to ask for it at the gun show this weekend.  Maybe $35?  It's cool, but I don't want to keep it.  "Discuss."
