I was pleasantly surprised to check the site and see this thread has gone 2 pages since I looked at it yesterday.

Today me and the kids are planning a treehouse.  Last night I went over to Lowe's and got some pressure treated 6x6's and some bags of cement.  Now I just have to figure out where to put the posts.

Those posts are heavy.  I smashed my finger with one of them and today the whole end of it is swelled up and purple.

That is going to be a three trips to Lowe's job.

Yes, I just hope it is not 3 trips every day.  Now I can't find any string to layout my baseline. 

Hey SC just do like my wife when she builds. Here's a corner, here's a corner and here's a corner. The 4th corner is bound to fit in somewhere. lol, I hope ya'll a great fun day. RTR!

I ended up using some "Friendship String" from my daughters craft box.  I think she uses it for making bracelets.  I had to tie two pieces together and it wasn't very strong.  I broke it once and had to tie it back together.  But... it worked eventually and saved me a trip to Lowe's, which is a real time killer.

I eyeballed it to start with to place my batter boards.  It is a good thing I found the string.  I was about 2 feet off from being parallel to the house.


The tree is about 20 feet from the corner of the house and we plan to build a bridge over to the back deck, which has the same floor height as the treehouse.  That's why I lined it up with the house.

A couple of feet off gives the structure character. HTH

I think we will have plenty of character.  The kids insist that we paint it crimson and put a big ol' script A on the door.  I will see if I can steer them toward a more "natural" look, but if they won't change their minds, crimson it shall be.

Jamos - y'all must have poor management at your local Longhorn.  Ours in Huntsville has good food, and I've definitely never had an issue with the service.

SC - good luck with the tree house project.  Are you going by a kit of some type or just a homemade blueprint?

Kit? Kit!?  We don't need no stinking kit!  Just kidding.

I'm flying by the seat of my pants actually.  Tree houses can be tough because you have to work within the shape of the tree.  We got pretty lucky with ours.  One side doesn't have any big limbs until about 19' up.  We have enough room to snuggle a 16' x 16' platform tucked up underneath that limb.

We have to see a picture of this when you are done. As long as no one breaks their neck your kids are going to think you are the coolest Dad ever. Now if you don't paint it crimson and put a script A on the door you will just be an OK Dad.

Oh yes, they are working hard.    The little guy says he doesn't want to build a tree house, he just wants a tree house.  They tried to run the armstrong post hole diggers for a minute.  The little guy couldn't lift them back up out of the hole.  My daughter managed to get about a half cup of dirt out during her turn.

But... they are absolutely having a blast.  Every 10 minutes or so I have to stop digging so they can see how deep the hole is.

Well, supper was good.  Now back to work.  We took some pictures this morning before we started.  We'll take some more when we finish for the day and I will try to post one or two when it gets too dark to work.

Yeah, that's why you have to take that break every 10 minutes.  For the kids!

Well, I thought of a little problem.  I was just about ready to fill the hole with cement, then it occurred to me that this wet post is going to shrink a good 1/2 inch when it dries out in a couple of months.

Hmmm.... 

I think I may fill it up with crusher run, or maybe just put the dirt back in there.  Thoughts?
