Today's football schedule is a little bit of a let down after last night.

Some of the talking heads are hyping Miami. I know they are playing Ramer High School tonight, but it will be interesting to see what they've got.

It can't be any worse than Wednesday night.  Laughing

I just checked the satellite and was surprised to find a couple of games.  They usually skip Friday's since it is high school football night.  I thought I was going to have to wait until tomorrow to get any more.

I'll watch Miami for a while.  But last night I didn't get into bed until well after midnight, and I got up at 5:15.  I'm dragging already.

But you got to see the 2nd half of the Ole Miss-Vandy game. I went to bed early so I could catch a boot and a tin can. Oh yeah, and to be the main course for the biting flies.

My boys from TCHS are playing Mountain Brook this week, I think. Hopefully they show up, unlike the jamboree they had against Pelham from what I understand.

These were flies or gnats (no-see-'ums; Ceratopogonids)?  That's good biology; transporting blood for their kids.

These little bastids. They bite like a mosquito sting, but are faster and more relentless. I've never seen them anywhere but here in Florida.

Conclusion of my countdown of my five favorite moments as a football fan in the foreign field.

Today: #1 - Rocky Block

My first "big" game overseas.  I woke up at 3:00 AM for the 3:30 kickoff.  The game was terrible; one of the worst I can remember watching.  With a few minutes left in the 4th quarter I just wanted the game to end so I could go back to sleep for a little while before going to church.  Just a year earlier I could not have imagined a scenario in which I would A) be watching the Alabama-Tennessee game at 3:30 AM Sunday morning in a foreign country, and B) would want to go to sleep immediately after an Alabama win over Tennessee.  Then all of a sudden Tennessee is lining up for the potential game-winning FG and it looks the undefeated season is about to come to an end in a stunning loss to an inferior Tennessee team coached by an idiot.

When Cody blocked the kicked I probably woke up everybody still sleeping on my wing of the dorm along with the people above and below me.  I remember head-butting the bed (why? I don't know).  The next week I showed the highlights to all my classes, who had no clue what they were watching.  I think I watched the video of the last play several times a day for the next week or so.  And it's probably a good thing I didn't have access to youtube at the time, because if I'd seen the video below I probably would have packed up and gotten on the first plane home.

Ahh, no wonder.  Those are Tabanids (deer flies; several species).  Usually they bite your head (or the highest point), so a hat or cap helps.  Nasty little beggars.

They attacked my arms, legs, back, earlobes, you name it. Deer flies are typically bigger than these guys. Biting flies are a tad smaller than a typical housefly.

BTW, we have our share of no see'ems, too.  Angry

Games like that only come along once in a generation.  I hope to be in the stands for the next one some day.
