These little bastids. They bite like a mosquito sting, but are faster and more relentless. I've never seen them anywhere but here in Florida.
Ahh, no wonder.  Those are Tabanids (deer flies; several species).  Usually they bite your head (or the highest point), so a hat or cap helps.  Nasty little beggars.

They attacked my arms, legs, back, earlobes, you name it. Deer flies are typically bigger than these guys. Biting flies are a tad smaller than a typical housefly.

BTW, we have our share of no see'ems, too.  Angry

Next time wear this.  HTH.

But you got to see the 2nd half of the Ole Miss-Vandy game. I went to bed early so I could catch a boot and a tin can. Oh yeah, and to be the main course for the biting flies.
These were flies or gnats (no-see-'ums; Ceratopogonids)?  That's good biology; transporting blood for their kids.

well , I'm not sure on the exact family tree of those man eaters but ,
we have some here that look like those that will eat you alive

come on down and I'll put on the bow of the boat and make a
quick stop in West Fowl River just where you can start to see the D.I. bridge

they bit me fifteen times before I could get the trolling motor up to run
every bite mark had a trail of blood running down my leg several inches
there were like a flying weed eater with ice picks for teeth

Scares the fish??  What fish?
All you caught was a boot, a wormy redfish, and a pocket full of crabs.

You have to wear the worm if you want to catch the big ones.

A pocket full of crabs is an embellishment. I would have been proud to have them.  Laughing

I'm dieting. If I was smart, I would only eat what I catch, or maybe the worms that SC eludes to if I catch nothing. I would be at my goal in no time!
