So smithgeneral, you live near Pell City. That means Cook Springs, Chula Vista, Eden, or Ashville. All four qualify as the "country." I really like Ashville with its small town feel and look. Plus, its not far from I-20 or I-59. Chula Vista sounds like you, though.

I like Ashville too, very nice.  But no I literally live "near Pell City"  I am not in any city limits.  But I am only a couple miles out of Pell City, maybe a couple miles out of Eden too.

Plant Bradford Pears or Silver Maples, they both grow fast and you can have a nice tree in like 5-7 years, sooner with the Bradford Pear. Also, Sugar Maple and and Red Maple. I have planted them and in a few years have had beautiful trees with lots of shade.

I agree with the maples, but the Bradfords look too much like WalMart to me.  They've been over-planted.

The Bradfords are popular because they grow so fast, have nice blooms in spring, and give a yard some fast shade and don't bad mouth Wal-Mart.

OKAY.  But it's not WM that I dislike, it's the overplanting of Bradford Pears.  At least the new hybrids don't split as easily as older ones; first sign of ice and they're on the ground.  And I love the fall colors they have.  They just don't look like yard trees to me anymore.

BTW, I planted 2 Yoshino Cherries in my yard this spring.  And I cut down 2 Junipers today that were too big (near the house).

I have 3 or 4 bradford pears, they are pretty.  But  I want as many different kind of trees as possible.

I like her.

At least you'll be done with it this AM.  It'll take all day for that thing to get over here.  I am anxious to see how my ditch handles a significant rain event.

Yes, she has that 'girl next door' look.
I'm taking a hard look at this wall of thunderstorms right now; daunting.  I'm okay with rain, but every one of these lines of storms carries the potential for tornadoes.  I'd just as well not have trees from neighbor's huge brush pile flying around my house.  Tongue

Yes, please stand out near your ditch for us, camera in hand, so we can also see how well your hydrological design handles the rain event.

Silver Maples are a huge mistake. If you want something to clean up after, get a pet.

Don't you love those gum balls (severe-sarcasm warning).  Use your chainsaw.  My neighbor in Louisiana died after falling on a gumball in his driveway; lay there all night and never recovered.  I cut the tree down (in his yard) the next week.

What do you guys think about the HUGE old pines?  All the small ones are marked for demolition, but as of now I have no plans to remove the big ones.

They are the tallest trees on the property by probably 20' there are 5 or 6 of them (in the main field area, I have a forest area which is a whole other topic).  One is literally 5' around or so.
